Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The text recognition runs entirely in your browser using an on-device OCR engine, so your image never leaves your device. Only the engine and a small English language model are downloaded once from our own servers, then cached — your picture itself is never sent anywhere.

Which image types work, and how big can they be?

PNG, JPG, WebP, and BMP images up to 15 MB. Clear, high-contrast printed text gives the best results.

Why is the first run slower than later ones?

The first time you use it, your browser downloads the OCR engine and a small (~2 MB) English language model from our servers. After that they are cached, so later runs start almost instantly.

How accurate is the text recognition?

It is very good on clear, printed text. Handwriting, low-contrast, skewed, or noisy images are harder and may need a cleaner photo. For best results, crop to the text and use good lighting.
