What are Content Credentials?
Content Credentials are a growing open standard (C2PA) for recording where a piece of media came from — who or what created it, which tools edited it, and whether AI was involved — cryptographically signed so any later tampering shows. Adobe, Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, and camera manufacturers are attaching them to photos and AI outputs.
Read provenance, not guesses
Tools that claim to “detect AI” by analysing pixels are unreliable and get worse every time image models improve. This inspector instead reads the provenance actually attached to the file. If a signed credential is present, you learn something verifiable; if none is there, we tell you plainly rather than invent a confidence score.
That honesty is the whole point: a present, valid credential is strong evidence, while its absence means “no record found,” not “fake” or “real.”
Also reads plain metadata
Alongside C2PA, the tool surfaces ordinary EXIF metadata when present — camera model, lens, software, and capture time — which can add useful context. Unlike a signed credential, EXIF can be edited, so it is shown as supporting detail rather than proof.
Why this matters more over time
As AI-generated images become impossible to spot by eye, provenance is how people, platforms, and regulators will tell what is what — and rules are beginning to require it. Being able to check an image’s credentials privately, without uploading it, becomes more useful every year.

Does this detect AI images?
It reads declared provenance (Content Credentials), not a guess from the pixels. If an image carries credentials saying it was AI-generated or edited, you will see that; if it has none, the tool says so honestly rather than inventing a verdict.
What are Content Credentials?
A tamper-evident record (the C2PA standard, backed by Adobe, Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, and camera makers) embedded in a file, describing how it was created and edited and by which tool, cryptographically signed so alterations show.
Can Content Credentials be faked or removed?
They can be stripped, which simply leaves no record, but not silently altered — the signature breaks if the content or its history changes, which is what makes a present, valid credential trustworthy.
How is this different from EXIF metadata?
EXIF is ordinary, editable metadata (camera, lens, capture time) that the tool also shows. C2PA Content Credentials are cryptographically signed provenance, so they are far harder to forge — the tool treats present, signed credentials as evidence and EXIF as context.
Is my image uploaded?
No — the credentials and metadata are read on your device in the browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Why do most images show no credentials?
Content Credentials are still being adopted, and many platforms strip metadata on upload, so most images do not carry them yet. Missing credentials do not mean an image is fake or real — only that no provenance was recorded or it was removed.
